  • ~ Circe ~

Daughter of the sun God Helios and oceanic naiad Perse, the mythology surrounding the enchantress Circe first captivated me as a child.

Famous for her ability to transform men into beasts, Circe is best known for her appearance in Homer's Odyssey, in which Odysseus visits her island and she turns his crew into swine. This story inspired wonder and fear in me when I was little, but it is Madeline Miller's adaptation of Circe that I love best of all. Told from Circe's perspective, this novel sheds a sympathetic light on her as she endures her trials.

I painted her here as I like to envision her. Circe, preferring the company of her spellbound animals to the humans who previously occupied her island, holding a mandragora bloom for protection and offering her cup of potion to an unsuspecting visitor.
